The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on February 20, 2026, issued the notification regarding making toll payments fully digital.
The following has been stated namely: -
• The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is considering eliminating cash transactions at National Highway toll plazas from April 01, 2026, making toll payments fully digital.
• Post-implementation, toll payments will be accepted only through FASTag (RFID-based electronic tolling) or Unified Payments Interface (UPI), aiming to improve efficiency, transparency, and ease of movement.
• With over 98% FASTag adoption, most toll transactions are already electronic. Vehicles without valid FASTag currently pay double the user fee, while UPI users are charged 1.25 times the applicable toll rate.
• Plaza-level assessments show that cash payments cause congestion, longer wait times, and disputes, especially during peak hours.
